Meet The New Kits On The Block – Jennifer Lee Rossman 1

Jennifer Lee Rossman came to us through our recent Open Submissions period with her novella Anachronism, which enchanted all of us when we read it. Jennifer agreed to submit to a little interrogation from me – welcome to the team, Jennifer!

  1. Could you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hi! I’m a 26-year-old writer from Oneonta, New York, where I live with my mother, cat, and betta fish. I’m a science and science fiction geek, and I use a power wheelchair. My name is an anagram of “More ferns, ninja eels!” which is one of the main reasons I use my middle name.

    2. Could you please tell us a little bit about your novella – no spoilers please!

In a nutshell: Time traveler meets girl, time traveler tells girl she’s the future president, time traveler and girl go on a roadtrip to stop a nuclear war. Anachronism is full of snark and banter from the main characters and has some surprises I hope people won’t see coming.

    3. What are you most looking forward to about working with Kristell Ink?

Do I get extra points if I say “everything”? But seriously, I’m excited for every aspect of the process. This is all so new to me, and I’m enjoying it all (I literally did a happy dance when these interview questions arrived in my inbox).

    4. What was it that drew you to SFF in the first place, and what made you want to become a writer?

I think the real world bores me. I jokingly “refuse” to watch movies that don’t involve space, time travel, or monsters, so it’s only natural that I write in that genre.

I’ve always written. I was homeschooled, didn’t have many friends, and couldn’t do much physically. So I wrote. I guess as kind of an escape from the real world.

    5. What is your favourite part of writing?

When a little, insignificant line inspires a twist even I didn’t expect. Those goosebumps are the best goosebumps.

    6. Who are your favourite SFF writers, and can you share some of your favourite books and movies of the past few years?

Okay, so here’s a secret I’m not proud of: I don’t read as much as I should. I used to, but somehow I stopped having time for it. I have been getting back into it lately, and love Joe Haldeman’s The Accidental Time Machine, as well as the Barque Cat series by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough (psychic cats in space? I wish I’d thought of that!).

I love the Marvel movies, things like The Adjustment Bureau and Jurassic World, and I’m going to sneak in a TV show and say that Doctor Who is possibly the best show ever.

    7. Any links you’d like to share with us?

I’m on Twitter @JenLRossman and I’m documenting my path to publication (often with snarky comments about myself) on my blog,

My Goldilocks-inspired short story, Scrapefoot, is one of 20 sci-fi fairytale retellings in Circuits & Slippers, an anthology edited by Jaylee James that is expected to be published in September.
